Today is Giving Tuesday. For those who aren’t familiar, Giving Tuesday is a "global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world."
Hammermill® paper has always cared about the communities where we live and work. But this year, we’re encouraging you to support our worldwide community, with a donation to our new philanthropic partner, One Tree Planted.
What is One Tree Planted?
One Tree Planted is a non-profit focused on global reforestation. In 2021, they planted more than 23 million trees, through 166 projects, in 42 countries around the world. And they’re on their way to planting 25 million more this year.
As committed practitioners of reforestation ourselves, Hammermill paper would be hard pressed to recommend a more worthy cause for your donation dollars. And here’s the amazing part: OTP can plant a tree for each dollar donated. Which means our own 2022 donation of $50,000 translates into 50,000 new trees planted. Talk about an amazing return on a philanthropic investment.
The importance of reforestation
Even if you’ve heard them before, the following facts are worth repeating. The world’s forests absorb an estimated 2.3 billion tons of CO2 per year. As a result, 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation. And here’s a fact that may literally take your breath away: 20% of the world’s oxygen is produced by the currently shrinking Amazon Rainforest.
While rebuilding forests after natural disasters and deforestation is not easy, One Tree Planted is on a mission to make it simple for anyone to make an impact by planting trees. This doesn’t just benefit nature and the climate, it directly impacts people living in the affected areas.
